Home EV Charging Options

There are two main types of home EV charging:

  • Level 1 (Standard Power Point) – plugs into a regular 10A outlet, charges at 2–5kW, typically 8–20 hours for a full charge
  • Level 2 (Dedicated Charger) – purpose-built unit on a dedicated 20–40A circuit, charges at 7–22kW, typically 3–8 hours for a full charge

We recommend a Level 2 dedicated charger for everyday convenience. A dedicated circuit means faster charging without affecting your household power.

Switchboard & Capacity Assessment

Before installation, we assess your switchboard to confirm it can handle the additional load of an EV charger. An EV charger drawing 7kW on a single-phase supply requires approximately 30A — that is a significant portion of a typical household supply.

If your board does not have spare capacity, we can recommend a mains upgrade or load management solution that shares available power between the charger and your home other circuits.

Installation & Compliance

We handle the complete electrical installation:

  • Circuit design – optimal route from switchboard to charger location
  • Dedicated circuit – new RCD-protected circuit with appropriate cable sizing
  • Isolator switch – mandatory disconnection point for maintenance
  • Weatherproof mounting – outdoor-rated enclosures and IP-rated connections
  • Compliance certification – all work tested and certified to AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 5139

How much power does an EV charger need?
A typical home charger runs at 7–22kW. A 7kW unit on single-phase needs about 30A. We assess your switchboard to confirm capacity before quoting.
Can I install it myself?
EV chargers must be installed by a licensed electrician and comply with AS/NZS 5139 (Electric vehicle mobile charging systems). Self-installation is not permitted.
Do you supply the charger unit?
We can arrange supply through our preferred brands or install a unit you purchase separately. We discuss options during the assessment.
How long does installation take?
