Defect Notice Rectification in Melbourne

ESV or distributor-issued defect notices fixed fast — compliant, certified and documented.

What Is a Defect Notice?

A defect notice is an official document issued by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) or your electricity distributor when a safety hazard is found in your electrical installation. It is not optional — it is a legal requirement to fix the defects within the stated timeframe:

  • ESV defect notices – issued after an inspection, audit or complaint. Must be rectified within the timeframe stated on the notice.
  • Distributor defect notices – issued by your electricity distributor (AusNet, CitiPower, Jemena or Powercor) when a hazard is found at the meter or mains.
  • Electrician-issued defect notices – if a licensed electrician finds a hazard during an RTA check or other work, they must issue a notice and report it to ESV.

Urgency Levels

Defect notices carry urgency ratings that dictate how quickly you must act:

  • Danger Present – immediate risk of fire or electrocution. Power may be disconnected. Must be fixed before power can be restored.
  • Danger Could Arise – a fault that could become dangerous. Typically 14 days to rectify.
  • Not Compliant – does not meet current standards but is not an immediate danger. Typically 28 days to rectify.

Missing the deadline can result in further fines, power disconnection or legal action from ESV.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you respond to a defect notice?
For "Danger Present" notices, we can often attend the same day or next business day. For other urgency levels, we schedule within your deadline. Contact us as soon as you receive the notice for the fastest response.
Can I fix the defect myself?
No — only a licensed electrician can rectify an ESV or distributor defect notice and issue the compliance paperwork. DIY repairs will not satisfy the notice and may create further legal issues.
What happens if I ignore the defect notice?
ESV can disconnect your power, issue fines and take legal action. The defect notice is a legal requirement — it must be addressed within the stated timeframe.
