Switches, Dimmers & Controls in Melbourne

From modern touch switches to heritage toggles and trailing-edge dimmers — the right control for every light and fan.

Light Switch Types

Switches come in a range of styles and technologies:

  • Standard rocker switches – the modern Australian standard, available in multiple colours and finishes
  • Touch switches – flush, capacitive-touch panels that glow on activation, sleek and modern
  • Heritage toggle switches – lever-style switches in brass, bronze or Bakelite for period homes
  • Smart switches – Wi-Fi or Zigbee-enabled switches controllable from your phone or voice assistant
  • Labelled switches – custom-engraved faceplates for appliances like fans, cooktops or HOBs

Dimmers

Dimmer switches require the right pairing with your lights:

  • Leading-edge dimmers – traditional dimmers, designed for incandescent and halogen bulbs. May flicker or buzz with LED loads.
  • Trailing-edge dimmers – designed for LED and CFL loads. Smooth, quiet dimming with no flicker. Recommended for all modern LED installations.
  • Memory dimmers – remember the last brightness level when switched off and on again
  • Multi-location dimming – control the same lights from multiple switches (3-way or 4-way circuits)

We always recommend trailing-edge dimmers for LED lighting — they eliminate flicker, buzzing and premature bulb failure.

Fan Controllers

Ceiling fans need proper speed control:

  • Wall-mounted fan controllers – wall switch that adjusts fan speed, available in standard and dimmer-style designs
  • Pull-chain controls – traditional overhead chain, but can be upgraded to wall control
  • Smart fan controls – integrate with smart home systems for scheduled and remote operation

Standard dimmer switches cannot control fan speed — fan controllers use different technology and must be used separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a dimmer switch with any LED light?
No — you need a dimmable LED fixture AND a compatible dimmer. Trailing-edge dimmers work with most LED loads. We check compatibility before installation to avoid flickering or buzzing.
What is the difference between leading-edge and trailing-edge dimmers?
Leading-edge dimmers cut the start of each voltage wave — designed for old incandescent bulbs. Trailing-edge dimmers cut the end of the wave — designed for LEDs and CFLs. Trailing-edge is smoother, quieter and prevents flicker with modern lights.
Can I control lights from multiple switches?
Yes — 3-way and 4-way circuits let you control the same lights from different locations. Common in bedrooms (either side of the bed), hallways and large rooms. We can upgrade existing single-location circuits to multi-location control.
